Kolbeckite and his bondsman, Pyrophanite , take in the wide concourse of the Chairman's compound on Pelasgon. A priority assignment reached their office just moments ago with a urgent dispatch to Al-Thynninan. A geon tribe has just emerged from the massive cave network in Frostford, close to the center of the planet;s surface. Although so far the Geon have not displayed any hostile intent, the language barrier is not something any of the locals has managed to overcome and it is feared that if someone does not come negotiate soon they might become frustrated and retreat back into the tunnels where they cannot be found again. A CBSS explored named Lubya on the world has spent the better part of the last few months looking for any trace of them and until recently thought his efforts were fruitless. Shuttle service is prepared to bring you whenever you are ready to depart.
Avatar
Kolbeckite and Pyrophanite listen to the briefing in contemplative silence, then give a farewell to the Chairman before leaving the compound to head to the spaceport. On the way they ruminate on what the potential stance and TL of the Geon in Frostford could be, and discuss plans for approach. (I haven't bought anything with the 700 credits my civilian package gave me, shall I spend some now before we leave?)
Avatar
(I was about to ask if you wanted to yeah, TL 4 Pharms arent available in the Iron Stars but otherwise anything TL4 and lower is available for purchase on Pelasgon. We've found it easiest to just post a list and i can tell you if something isn't available. Assume book prices for goods)
Avatar
(Lazarus Patch x 2, Medkit x2, Backpack, Rations x 10, Survival Kit. By my calculations they come to 375 assuming book prices. I don't think anything else will be of use)
Avatar
(Lazarus patches are TL4 pharms and cannot be purchased or found anywhere)
02:34
(Everything else is available)
Avatar
(oh, they were in the tools and medical menu, not pharmaceuticals, just like medkits, unless its a houserule?)
Avatar
(yes, we use the frontier medicine in the equipment guide in #rules-and-books )
02:39
(medkits work fine since those are conventional non-pre tech medicines. Like bandages and stuff)
Avatar
(ok that works, I'll buy the rest then and tomorrow I will remove the cost from my credits when I'm on PC)
02:47
The two briefly head to the CBSS provisioner and buy a slew of supplies that they shove in a backpack they also buy, carried by Kolbeckite, leaving Pyrophanite light and flexible in case he needs to fight. They then head to the star port and board the shuttle to their destination with a pregnant silence between them.
02:47
(do I have to stat up Pyro too? And manage his equipment?)
Avatar
(He will follow a martial humanoid stat since he is a warrior, and that stat line is what martial NPC's generally use. He wouldn't really increase in power, but his equipment should be something we keep track of- though he probably doesn't need more than armor, a weapon , and one or two extra things you might want him to carry. Alternatively, we have rules for a companion character on our rules document, in that case if you decide to make him one he would need a full sheet and i can make one for you. Let me know what you want to do)
Avatar
(I think let's keep him simple. I don't know what the martial humanoid is best at, strength or Dex, so let's give Pyro a large melee weapon if its strength and a rifle - sized ranged weapon if its Dex)
Avatar
(it can be either, depends how you want him to fight)
Avatar
(I guess ranged, if he'd be as good at both, stat wise)
Avatar
(dex is 14 then)
03:20
"So, we're going to translate for more piles of rocks like us. What do you think they're going to want for the price of CBSS entry?"
03:20
Pyro has enough of the pregnant silence and decides to ask as you collect your belongings
Avatar
Kolbeckite considers this. A long time. "Hopefully I can appeal to their sense of community and then it will not be the CBSS entering, but rather, a pair of Geon, like them. If all else fails, we play the middle man between the communists and them and come to an agreement." A pause. "I don't have to tell you this, but be measured, yet ready. They are brothers and children of the Stone, like us, but there's no accounting for how their culture reacts to perceived threats." "To the matter at hand. Our first objective is to make contact with whoever is in charge on the CBSS side once we land and ask what they hope to achieve when they make contact with the Geon. We go from there."
Avatar
It’s sensible advice and your companion is satisfied. Hefting your bags you make your way outside to where a small shuttle is waiting for you. Two pilots and a crew chief make up the complement assigned to the ship for this journey. Even with all of you aboard it should still be some what spacious. You’re fitted for vac suits and your equipment is stored in your personal cabins. Pre flight checks are completed and the shuttle begins heading for the troubled world of Al-Thynnian. (Near the top of the roll20 we have a handout for what you can do during downtime while traveling. This is a quick jump so we have just a day of downtime if you want to start something )
Avatar
On the way to the ice world, Kolbeckite familiarises himself with the medkits he purchased, going through the stuff in the pack and reading the brief instructions (studying Heal)
Avatar
(do I now start posting in Lyuba's channel?)
Avatar
(I thought it would be better to do the negotiation there since you can see what’s happened already)
Avatar
(Any idea what you’d want to do now that you’re split off? Did you want to tackle the@other half of the investigation or do something entirely new )
Avatar
(I think yea, I want to support the investigation separately and support Lyuba remotely)
Avatar
(I’m not sure what you mean by that)
01:17
(Theres the matter of going to Vadhat to get artem’s body and to sift information from his implants /compad which might further the investigation. Lubya is going into that mine so there’s not really a way to help him unless you’re also going to be on that mission, which you said you didn’t want to do)
Avatar
( I just meant work the case from different angles, basically going to Vadhat)
Avatar
(Alright. We have two days of downtime on the way as we travel via shuttle )
Avatar
(awesome, I will add progress to my heal skill training)
14:23
(I presume Kolbeckite has returned the flop rifle?)
Avatar
(If you want to keep it you can keep it)
15:25
(You'll probably find it handly since this isn't over yet)
Avatar
(okay sounds good)
Avatar
Your ship enters Vadhat space after two days in transit, and approaches the space station recently lifted from lockdowns. Agent Pasha managed to defeat the shapeshifting yama king known as Artem- a man designed by metaspace and the party to become a powerful agent of infiltration. It seems Artem decided to use these gifts for his own self interest, and ended up paying the ultimate price after a killing spree on the station. Your courier is welcomed into a small auxiliary shuttlebay where the liaison who assisted Pasha on the investigation is waiting. (edited)
15:36
(Pasha is on a break, and i dont want to NPC him since he's technically active, so ill get you the details through this guy instead) (edited)
Avatar
(Gonna have Pyro on standby until I need him for violence so I dont have to emote two people all the time) Pyrophanite busies himself around the station while Kolbeckite approaches the liaison. "Greetings friend. I am Kolbeckite of the CBSS. I am working on a case related to the one you worked recently with Agent Pasha. May we talk?" Kolbeckite assumes as casual a posture as his Geon body allows.
Avatar
"Of course, I am here to assist you with whatever questions you have about the investigation. I read the orders, you're also here to try to collect information from his belongings and cybernetic implants"
Avatar
"Ah, you've been briefed. Then this will be easier. What do we have to go on other than his belongings and implants? Any contacts in the Crimson Claws?"
Avatar
"The implants will need to be removed from the body. We were told to wait for investigators to arrive. We believe Artem became radicalized after a long term spent investigating various party matters on the street, falling in too close of personal association with gangs and freedom fighters. We have several of them incarcerated on the planet below"
Avatar
"Very well, we may as well get started. Let's see the body."
Avatar
You are taken through the medbay to the back of the station, where the morgue and cold storage is located. A four number combination is punched into a keypad and you are admitted. Artem's body, along with the bodies of the eight people he killed while on station are all here, laid out, inventoried, and are awaiting funeral arrangements to be made by the families in other parts of the CBSS
Avatar
Kolbeckite, despite trying to keep his steps light, stomps into the morgue. "He's been busy" he attempts at human humour, looking at the bodies. He approaches Artem and examines the condition of his body.
Avatar
"Indeed he has" The body has been banged up from its fight with Pasha, shot twice in the side, and cut deeply with a blade down his chest. It was a headshot to the side of the head after that ultimately killed him.
Avatar
"Is the coroner around? Or has he already removed the implants?"
Avatar
"He is on his way.We were told to leave the body as is until other CBSS agents arrived- but now you are here. We also do have his compad, if you would like to review it before they get here
Avatar
"Mm, yes, that would be wise." Kolbeckite nods
Avatar
The compad is passed over to you, and information begins appearing all over the device. (I think rather than giant info dumps, if you have questions we can ask them to the device and ill give you the info)
Avatar
(What do I find if I look around the logs, who he contacted last and some time before and what about etc)
Avatar
Artem was in contact with Zhu regularly. He was charged with staring resistance movements on as many worlds as he could, especially with their main center of power on Vari destroyed now. Artem was charged with assassinating the governor of Vadhat, who had taken refuge on the space station due to unrest on the surface, but was unable to complete the mission before Agent Pasha stopped him. His next assignment was going to be selling off the mining equipment stashed on Pelasgon to private interests, and those funds would then be used to purchase weapons for an uprising on Mehani, where the local population is much smaller
Avatar
Kolbeckite studies the logs and after that will wait for the coroner to arrive to discuss implants.
Avatar
There is a hiss of the hydraulic doors as a wizened looking doctor enters the room in scrubs. He is placing a surgical mask over his mouth and nose, and begins assessing the room. "Hello, I see the party has sent an agent then. We have the body prepared but have not tried lifting any of the implants out. I believe he has an implanted argus web, and panspectral optics with an additional recording function. This is going to be grisly work, but you should be able to scoop everything he saw and sensed over the past several days"
Avatar
"That would be of great help. I place the future of this case on your capable hands." Kolbeckite speaks softly, then would not distract the coroner from his work unless addressed
Avatar
The digging into the body goes on for some moments, before an access cable from the argus web is cut free and spliced into something that can be connected to your datapad. "I know it's grisly but if you want to see what his implants recorded, this is the only way"
Avatar
Kolbeckite seems unconcerned. He attempts to play the recordings on his pad.
Avatar
Artem personally murdered eight people in this space station. He also has first hand views of the interior and security protocols of the crimson claws headquarters , hidden in the asteroid field around Maintaine. The garrison seems strong, a highly advanced and well crewed outpost with modern weapons and defenses. They looked to be preparing for an attack and had hoped it’s agents would sow enough chaos to keep the Cbss busy and looking elsewhere
Avatar
Though he doesn't show it, Kolbeckite is alarmed at what he sees. (Does Kolbeckite have someone to report his findings to, like a handler, or would he have to find someone to report to, as someone not in law enforcement?)
Avatar
(Would be directly to the chairman/party in this case and together there would be assignment of agencies and personnel )
Avatar
(How long would it take for Kolbeckite to travel to report to the party in person? If he thought it would take too long he'd try to contact them remotely as time is of the essence)
Avatar
(This is a bit age of sail as far as travel times here. Transmitted Messages travel a hex per day, but so does a spike ship , so in this case I think it’s faster/better to just go in person since we won’t need to wait for a reply message )
Avatar
(ok, then I believe Kolbeckite has everything he needs from here. He wants to travel back and report his findings to the party, mainly about the enemy base in the asteroid field and that Mehani has resistance support that might need stomping out)
Avatar
(two more days back to Pelasgon. We're ahead in time from Lubya right now, so I think any task we send you out on once you make your report will need to be solo )
Avatar
(cool, noted, will study Heal again)
Avatar
Word of your ship's return spreads long before your ship makes it into the shipyard over Pelasgon. A message from the Chairman inviting you to his compound on the surface scrolls across your terminal
22:24
He understands you have been working up your investigation, and is curious to see what you have obtained. A cargo lighter modified to carry passengers is waiting at the shipyard to bring you down to the surface, crewed by the party's personal revolutionary guard unit
Avatar
The two Geon board the shuttle with urgency, making sure to greet the guards properly however
Avatar
The crew is quiet and begins the process of heading down to the surface (if you didnt want to talk to them we'll just move along)
Avatar
"All this, just for us? We appreciate the care, but I am sure you guys are better placed anywhere else than watching over two nobodies like us" Kolbeckite attempts at his understanding of human manners
Avatar
'The chairman has wanted to ensure nothing happens to you before you have a chance to deliver your report. You are carrying vital information to an ongoing party investigation and if he knows, someone else may as well who does not have the best interests of the party in mind"
15:45
"You're safe and in good handsw ith us"
Avatar
"well then, your service and the care of the chairman and the party is appreciated" he nods (we can fast forward if you like)
Avatar
Upon reaching the ground the door of the cargo lighter opens, and the guards emerge first, signaling it is safe for you to come forward, and for the chairman to come out of the impressive hunting lodge once they think it is safe. Snow is falling gently this high in the mountains north of Pelasgon's capital city. Evidence of a successful hunt is strung on a tree nearby, being attended by a few of the chairman;s guards
Avatar
The Geon salute the chairman and Pyro goes off to secure the perimeter, despite guards already having done that, preferring to rely on his own instincts. Kolbeckite comes forth. The cold and snow seem not to bother him. "Greetings Chairman. I am Kolbeckite. I have been looking into Artem's case, following the successful detainment of one Lobinsky, an agent of the Crimson Claw, who followed orders from someone called Zhu, an associate of Artem. Artem managed to attack and murder eight people on Vadhat station. Agent Pasha was also working Artem's case when I had the chance to review the bodies and implant footage. Chairman, the news is distressing. There is a resistance movement on Mehani that is preparing for an uprising. Artem was going to sell them guns to fuel the riots. Perhaps more alarmingly, the footage showed a Crimson Claws base in the asteroid field just off Maintaine. They are well armed and well equipped Chairman. They prepare to strike."
Avatar
"this will need to be handled with all speed. We return to the capital, now. Agent Kolbeckite, I think you are long overdue for a promotion. We will discuss on the way. "
21:48
Soldiers begin preparing to get all of you back into the lander, and the Chairman cannot tear his eyes from the compad with the implant recordings on them- his steely eyes looking over every detail. During the revolution he was regarded as brilliant when it came to matters of strategy. Though never respected for his statecraft, he attained enough of a reputation by saving as many of his soldiers lives as possible, and when the time came for the CBSS party nominations he was a front runner by a long margin. You see some of that analytical thinking now as he looks over every detail of the recording, looking for the best way to solve this twin crisis
Avatar
"Yes Chairman." Kolbeckite watches the man's mind work. He awaits for the chairman to share his thoughts with him, staying quiet otherwise.
Avatar
The lighter passes over the woods, and finally the city below before the Chairman speaks again, just as the craft makes a small divert from its course to a mountain north of the capital. A hidden set of doors opens, revealing a metal tunnel and industrial lighting within before the ship lands in a hangar. Mechanics and laborers begin to move forward to refuel and handle other functions necessary for flight.
14:50
"Alright, well, I have something for you. I think you have an opportunity here to end a serious threat before it starts. As an individual agent you are far more nimble than our conventional military forces. We're deployed across several worlds right now- and this group may be monitoring our troop movements. If they see much of a change they will know we are coming. That said, you and your companion are uniquely suited to handle one of these two leads- either handling the resistance movement, or striking at the Crimson Claw base itself. "
14:51
"Which do you tihnk you'd have the greater chance of success doing?"
Avatar
Kolbeckite rumbles in thought. "It is my belief that as an independent unit of two, we do not have much to offer in an assault. However, I may be able to talk to the resistance, get a grip on what they take issue with and try to salvage the situation. Will there be a briefing, Chairman, or should I pose questions now?"
Avatar
"This is going to be more of a collaborative briefing" he says, gesturing for you to follow him down a long access hallway toward the crashing machine sounds of what sounds like a factory. "So if you have questions, lets get them addressed"
Avatar
Kolbeckite nods and walks next to the man down the hallway. "Is this a covert op, or official party business? Just so I know how to address the resistance members"
Avatar
"Tryingto head off a resistance movement should be as open as possible, We want the people to know the party has become aware of their complaints and we're prepared to stand behind them to address conditions there. People do not rebel for no reason. We have done something to turn these people against us, and if it is not against our ideals to correct we should. Mehani is about to get a million new inhabitants this month as we prepare to shelter some of the Noctuan refugees from the galactic west. That planet is not going to be just a small colony on the edge of CBSS space anymore, but could turn into a vital part of our workers movement. We need to head this off before it gets worse, or before the rebel ranks swell with impressionable newcomers"
Avatar
"Yes Chairman. I presume we expect these negotiations to last some time, as we go back and forth between what their demands are and what we can provide, and try to find a middle ground? If it is something I should wrap up then and there, I'd like to know what I can promise and what is off-limits so to speak. Just so I don't overpromise or underdeliver."
Avatar
"Conditions on that world are going to improve, namely to support the new colonists. We can promise them new holdings in space to support industry- without hurting the local Geon tribes interest in the environment. The Party is also prepared to send an infusion of luxury goods and money to assist with any local economic problems if you think it will be a useful bargaining chip. this is a carrot. If they do not take it, trhere will be military action and they'll be forced to respect the stick"
Avatar
"Sir? The locals are Geon? I might be able to use that to our advantage then, and it'd be easier to negotiate."
Avatar
"There is a tribe of geon who are the planet's natives, intermixed with human colonists from the CBSS who moved there to settle the planet. We believed it was entirely empty when the colony was established, and have been trying to ensure we don't challenge the locals too much as we grow and expand. They are very protective of the natural environment there and have raised issue with the establishment of most ground based factories."
17:24
"Both groups are CBSS citizens and we expect you'll find members of both races among those thinking about joining the Crimson Claws- though their reasons may not be the same both would want the CBSS to pack up and leave them be"
Avatar
"I believe I am the right person for this job, Chairman. As it happens, it is similar to my first assignment. Leave it with me Sir."
Avatar
"Well to that end I have something that may help ensure you have a safe time on the ground" The Chairman's walk has ended you both up in some sort of small hangar, where a geon sized mech suit is being prepared for use. "To that end, we can fit it as an expert suit, or a shock suit. It's your decision"
Avatar
Kolbeckite stares at the suit in disbelief. "Chairman, what...this is a great expense to take on the behalf of someone such as myself."
Avatar
"You have succeeded where so many other operatives have failed, or failed to turn up results. Thanks to you we know of two major problems that threaten the entire polity well in advance of their ability to inflict harm. Hard work begets great reward, such is the workers dream we all fight for every day"
21:52
(shock is for combat, so has a mass/power distribution more able to handle combat fittings. There are a few mech weapons that can be fitted to suits but you're also capable of just using whatever your normal guns are too when it is a suit mech. The specialist suits have a mass and power distribution that allows more support fittings like tools, comm equipment, scanners, ect
Avatar
(is the specialist suit still capable of combat but just less than the shock one, or not at all)
Avatar
(It’s just a difference of mass and power. )
23:39
(We have a mech builder on the Omni builder in #rules-and-books , and however you want to design your suit is what this one will be)
Avatar
(hm, so I found the spreadsheet, but I am not making much sense of it? Also the only thing on it seems to be a Shock Suit hull)
Avatar
(You have to go to file> make a copy )
Avatar
(Ah) (edited)
Avatar
(It locks the drop downs if you’re looking at the master copy so no one can accidently edit the database )
Avatar
(so I made a copy but only the hull dropdown is populated, the rest just expect me to type in them when I press the arrow)
Avatar
(Alright I’ll have to look into that)
Avatar
(btw, I am dealing with an NPC chairman right? I thought I would end up talking to a chairman player since we have a council channel, not that I mind, just making sure I understand)
Avatar
(The chairman is an NPC. Parsnips does the OOC faction management for me, but no player is gonig to get the in game leadership position because i dont think there needs to be an irl power dynamic here)
00:16
(I just dont see anything good coming out of that)
Avatar
(that is fair)
00:17
(I misunderstood then, I thought everyone in the chairman council channel is a chairman)
00:18
(which I just remembered is the top leadership position, so there couldn't be multiple chairmen. Then I haven't undestood what that channel is haha)
Avatar
(thats where we coordinate business and the decisions for what we do are made by the actual players) (edited)
Avatar
(ah ok. is that done by all members of cbss or only the ones with such authority?)
Avatar
(its how you have personal and player agency over the things happening within your faction. All CBSS players can talk in #cbss-chairmans-council . the #cbss-polity-channel down near the bottom is for parsnips to report the faction turn based on the player discussion, and for me to post any rewards or things the polity needs to know about)
Avatar
(ah right ok, we never really went through that and other than Lyuba, through the shared mission, no other member has talked to me haha)
Avatar
(I suppose the mech we can fit later on before we jump into the mission, we can just wrap this up for now) "It will carry you home and keep you safe on the ground. You seem tough, but now we do not need to worry about an errant pitchfork ending your career before it really gets going"
Avatar
"Thank you for placing your faith in me Chairman, I will leave immediately." Kolbeckite nods his head
Avatar
(if you didn't want to do anything else here on Pelasgon while we're here, we can get right into the mission)
Avatar
(If you make a New copy of the builder it should work now)
Avatar
( I just saw, I'll do that now)
Avatar
(oh boy, I was gonna put the most shitty melee weapon on the mech and it turns out to be the most power intensive weapon 😄 )
11:27
(is there any way to put the power output up other than hull?)
Avatar
(no there aren't any fittings that do it. The mass/power difference is based on the hull and theres no way to change the distribution via fittings)
Avatar
(cool, might go for shock then, just to have more fittings on it)
14:41
(oh wait, then with Shock I don't have enough Mass D: )
14:43
(hm, I can get more fittings with the specialist, it just means I can't have any weapons on it) (edited)
14:48
(all done)
Avatar
The next few hours are getting used to how the suit moves. Most of the micro-movements are handled by powerful onboard computers, but getting used to the extra weight behind your steps takes a bit of time to overcome. A crash course in how to use the electronics systems and how to read the gauges follows. You can see they've done the courtesy of scraping the Mandate Common lettering off most of them and re-naming them their Geon equivalents to save you time during hectic operations. The rust resistant coating, and camo paint is applied, and with the Chairman's blessing it is loaded onto a shuttle, meant to bring you to Mehani
16:33
(and that is just 1 day of downtime as Mehani is just a hex away)
Avatar
(lovely. I'll stick with studying Heal until I've completed it)
Avatar
There is only one settlement on Mehani where the CBSS maintains a presence and upon entering the system your six hour journey at sublight speed has you making atmospheric entry and landing just at its outskirts. Techs look over the Pathfinder on the way in, and they are happy with the results- systems are reporting active and you are cleared to walk. 500m from the settlement you can see a crowd slowly forming at its outskirts. They are mostly human, but there are a few from the local geon tribe intermixed with the onlookers as well.
Avatar
Kolbeckite enables the suit's active camo and tests it out, looking at the suits' limbs if he can. If he is satisfied with the results he will make his way towards the gathering, slowing down when he gets in earshot so they don't hear the mech and won't get so close as to be definitely heard. If he can hear what goes on in the gathering he will eavesdrop, otherwise will leave the mech in active camo and get out to approach on foot
Avatar
The fittings all work , but the group is paying attention to the ship coming down and the vanishing mech that came out of it. They cannot see you now but where you went and what is happening is all everyone is talking about
Avatar
Kolbeckite retreats to a distance so as not to decloak in their line of sight. He disables the camo and walks up to the crowd trying to make his approach look natural. If the group says nothing to him, he will greet them. (Is Pyrophanite with me or not?)
Avatar
(He doesn’t have a mech but I figured he would be around since he is your henchmen)
23:47
The crowd is paying attention to your movements and you greet them. Arriving in a mech, from a CBSS transport and looking like a party official they’re assuming you’ve come to say something about who you are, the situation here, what you plan to do, or any of those things
Avatar
Kolbeckite, seeing as the crowd is agreeable and non hostile, explains the situation and why he's there and asks the crowd if they know how he can get in touch with the crimson claws
Avatar
(Not having actually said anything I can’t really riff off how you’re approaching this) None of the crowd seems to be willing to come forward and just openly give up their neighbor when they have no guarantees about much of anything you’ll do.
Avatar
"The chairman himself has sent me here to parlay with the Crimson Claws. He is personally interested in resolving this situation peacefully. The chairman and the party's interest is in keeping you, the people of Mehani, happy. So please, be not afraid, I simply want to talk to the people, figure out what they are unhappy with, and try to provide solutions."
Avatar
It seems that since you're taking complaints, a queue begins to form where at least a fraction of the locals feel brave enough giving you their honest opinion- these are likely the ones who still feel the party is capable of accomplishing their interests more than the Claws or any other group here. A lack of diversions and luxuries, a lack of jobs, a small settlement , and not knowing much of what lies beyond the settlement limits are all issues that come up several times. There is also the matter of the other continent across the sea where perhaps the locals could live without the stifling environmental regulations the Geon have imposed, but those tensions will come to a head at some day in the future regardless
Avatar
"The CBSS will soon have an influx of new, brave, hard working brothers and sisters. It has been designated that they will make their new homes here. As such, there will be ongoing projects to house these people and to make sure that no one is left unheard or uncatered to, including you." At this point Kolbeckite lowers his volume, having hopefully gotten their attention, to promote a more quiet, civil discussion. "Many of the projects that will start will have you as their focus, your families, jobs and neighbourhoods. Now, I have taken note of all of your complaints, and please let me know if there is more. I will personally see to the fruitful start and continuation of these projects." He lowers his volume further, to a casual conversation level. "Now with all that in mind, we still cannot do the best we want to for this planet and all the people on it without also talking with the Crimson Claws to take stock of what we can do for them. If there is anyone here that knows how I can reach them, please, let me know. If you don't want to come forth now with this information, meet me back here in an hour. I will be here waiting."
Avatar
The public gathering empties out. No one wants to be seen as untrustworthy with secrets in such a tight knit settlement, but a half hour later a woman returns to the spot wearing sunglasses and a bandanna over her nose and mouth to avoid anyone casually seeing her features. "CBSS Representative, do you have a moment to talk, somewhere private? I have information you might think is useful"
Avatar
"Of course madam, lead the way. Thank you for coming forward" Pyro meanwhile will follow from a distance to make sure Kolbeckite is safe
Avatar
Finding a small alleyway, she looks around to ensure no one is coming and then takes a deep breath. "You asked to speak to the Crimson Claws, so here I am. Understand if something happens to me the members of my cell in this settlement will do everything in their power to burn it to the ground. I am here speaking to you under a flag of truce so we can both get something we want out of this meeting"
Avatar
"I assure you I am here with the best of intentions, and that reflects the way the party wants to handle the situation. I understand you are distressed and not at all warm towards the party. Let's talk: What can I do to alleviate that?"
Avatar
"the party is a blundgeon, a cover for oligarchs and we have seen that clearly here. The mayor is a party member and grow fat from our labor. He lives in the largest house in town, takes a cut of everything we make, and bows down to the naturalist Geons here too readily. We're living in a state of poverty, all because of him"

"I will relay the situation to the party. As I said before when I first arrived, the chairman is personally interested in resolving this situation peacefully, and by the sounds of it the way this mayor runs this place is a decision he made that the party are not privy to let alone agree to. As for my people, that will need more delicate handling, but I will dedicate my time and energy to it to ensure the best possible solution is found. I presume your comrades feel the same way? Is there anything else you would like for me to relay to the party?"
Avatar
"Nothing more than that. I've been out too long as it is. Do what you can to resolve this, and do it quickly if you can. We'll be waiting"
03:30
she looks around again to see if anyone has come out, and satisfied they have not, she begins leaving the alley. (edited)
Avatar
"Wait. How do I contact you again?"
Avatar
"this spot, tomorrow, same time. Come alone- no party members, no soldiers, no bodyguard. Just you. We'll talk again regardless of the situation"
Avatar
Kolbeckite enters the settlement and asks around about where the local Geon are that are causing issues with industry
Avatar
The naturalist Geon live in the forest to the west and north of the settlement. They are permitted to enter and leave as they will, as they've agreed to become CBSS citizens but have not wanted to leave their home
Avatar
Kolbeckite takes the mech and heads to the Geon settlement, spending some time looking for it
Avatar
(Survive/wis, as we haven’t been in these woods or the region before) (edited)
Avatar
The geon settlement is well hidden even with the scanning equipment of your mech. The CBSS colonists being surprised they weren’t alone makes. A bit more sense now. Three geon scouts find you wandering the woods close to dark. Their arms and armor are simple and meant for mobility rather than just survivability. You’re not sure what they make of the suit you are in. “Lost in the woods outsider?” One asks. His rifle is over his shoulder, not close to any kind of firing position
Avatar
Kolbeckite exits the mech in order to converse with them easier, and smiles "In a way I was until now. Well met friends. I seek shelter for the night and I would be delighted to spend it among my own kind. Would you happen to have somewhere for me to lodge?"
Avatar
"You with the CBSS? Saw a ship come down this morning, lots of Geon back home are nervous by all the attention lately"
Avatar
"I am indeed. I am Kolbeckite of Sanjaru. I have been working with the party for a short time, travelling around to smooth out relationships between it and new communities that come in contact. I was sent here to work out the kinks in negotiations between our people, the local settlement and a group of dissatisfied individuals whose voices have gone unheard too long. The chairman is personally interested in a peaceful resolution that puts an end to the understandable dissatisfaction people here have. I was hoping to spend some time with you and talk about these issues."
Avatar
“We will allow you into the settlement under. A banner of truce. Can you agree to that?”
Avatar
"My intentions are exclusively peaceful. Of course I will agree to that." Kolbeckite bows his head
15:58
( a bit about their settlement)
Avatar
(ah, I remember reading this! nice) (edited)
Avatar
The settlement is modest and is well hidden in the woods. You're not sure you could find it again if you needed to but you are welcomed within by the Geon here. Many of them look at the mech suit- seeing how it was made for you and that Geon are capable of such things. The tribal elders, five in total, make their way over to you to converse- no doubt the meandering walk you are about to go on will lead to the town square where all can hear.
Avatar
Kolbeckite follows the Geon patrol as they lead him in the settlement and he takes it all in with no shortage of amazement and slight homesickness. (I would like for him to gain a personal goal "personally oversee the negotiations and development of Mehani". So obviously he is already there to smooth relations over, but what he now wants is to keep coming back here to ensure that the ongoing projects work out well and that the people are all given a voice and that he does his best to help them get along together, as opposed to this being just another assignment for him that he does, wraps up and moves on from. Would you say that is a medium or long term goal?)
Avatar
(I would say long term since we're talking about this being a lot of projectS)
Avatar
(awesome, I'm ok with that)
22:09
(are the elders still walking to me, or here already?)
Avatar
(We can talk to them. Close enough)
Avatar
"Hail brothers. I am Kolbeckite, here all the way from Mehani, at the behest of the CBSS. I have been working with the party for a short while and I have been travelling around to help solve disputes, and was sent here by the chairman who has a personal interest in seeing the planet flourish. I have only spent a short time here and yet I share his sentiments, I believe that we can come together and smooth things over."
Avatar
“We hope you are right. The humans cut and burn. They litter, they poison the ground we live on and work with. “
13:22
“They refuse to be contained or controlled”
Avatar
"They live differently to us, brothers. I do not condone their way of life when it destroys the planet either. However they, like you, are part of the planet. A solution must be found together, not apart. I have not had the chance to visit their industries yet, but I know their leader does not represent them. He or she exploits them and keeps resources for themselves. It is something I will also have to address, but for now, I would like to suggest this: Would you be agreeable if they had to replant what they cut and burn, and process their litter?"
Avatar
"It would be a start in the right direction. it is something we even proposed before but they would not listen or agree to follow our recommendations "
Avatar
"Did you by any chance deal with the mayor and his men on that negotiation?"
Avatar
"They were theCBSS representatives on planet. They were all we had to go on"
Avatar
"No, I understand that, it's not your fault. It just explains the situation. Let me tell you now that the mayor is selfish and does not represent the CBSS' values, even if he represents the CBSS in an official capacity. I expect that will change, however. Would you like to talk to me about anything else before I go and try to deal with the problems in the settlement?"
Avatar
They seem to think this is the crux of their issue and if this is solved some good will and trust will be fostered between the existing colony and the naturalist geon here.
Avatar
If they are willing and able, Kolbeckite would like to stay the night here and lodge somewhere with the Geon and set off in the morning
13:44
He wants to get to know the community a little more
Avatar
There is usually a large community fire built at night when the cave and city are at its coldest. Many Geon crowd around it and this seems like the opportunity you have been waiting for.
Avatar
Pyrophanite goes off to mingle as Kolbeckite joins the Geon around the fire and mingles as well. He asks about their customs, what their life is like, and shows them the mech if they would be interested in it
Avatar
(this tribe was one a PC made up, let me check in with them to make sure im not stepping on toes and whatnot)
17:24
(i didnt really have anything unique planned myself)
Avatar
(I didnt really expect to get in depth with them, it's just something Kolbeckite would do but I expected we fade to black until the morning)
Avatar
You can see that the Geon here have harnessed metaspace for simple things like small settlement lights, crystal tools, and some other trappings where magic replaces industry. Nothing here is going to entirely out-pace the CBSS mechanical advantages but you can see the Geon here have adapted to modern life in a creative and novel way. Something to be studied for another time perhaps when the CBSS is once again able to sustain colonies
Avatar
As much as he can, Kolbeckite will try to learn about their way of doing things, hoping it will mean that he can transfer the knowledge to the people of the other settlement in hopes they replace the more environmentally unfriendly solutions.
12:46
(He is ready to set off apart from that)
Avatar
(I think really getting a study here would be more than just a night of talking and passive observation, but yes we can move on) Morning comes and you’re brought back to the entry of the cave city and are wished well. The mechs joints begin cycling up for your walk back to the settlement.
Avatar
(ok, I can come back to learn things I can actually use, and spend more time then)
15:09
Kolbeckite wants to use any contacts he might have in the CBSS to learn a little more about how he can catch the corrupt mayor on legal grounds that would get him fired. So he would be telling people he trusts about the mayor and asking "do you know of any laws he has broken, having done those things, that if exposed would get him fired"
Avatar
He has broken laws but on a frontier world like this where he is the last word in justice no one seems willing to come forward and openly accuse him of anything. The party moves slowly and those people and their families would be targets until the plodding investigation catches up- but no one believes he would be found innocent once it happens
Avatar
(Would it be realistic to spend some weeks or months building up a case against him, or is it better to try to set a trap for him to catch him red handed, if it succeeded, or is it better to try another more direct approach?) (edited)
Avatar
(Is this out of character or are you addressing someone?)
Avatar
(ooc, sorry, I put quotation marks for in character dialogue but can make sure I always do parentheses for ooc)
Avatar
(It helps me keep things straight. I’d prefer that if we can. I think it’s probably the best especially for the amount of material I can make up to move for the faster option
Avatar
(Hrm, I am honestly at a loss here. I don't want to go for violence, and any option that involves firing him for breaking the law would be too slow)
Avatar
(Or some kind of trap, a recording of him admitting wrongdoing, something more direct than having people go through an elaborate paper trail)
Avatar
(hrm good idea)
Avatar
(let me know if you need further prompting)
Avatar
(ok, this was real hard for me but I think I finally have an idea)
12:05
Kolbeckite will take the mech and head back to the settlement where the mayor is. He will then request an audience with him
Avatar
The mayor is happy to accept a meeting with a CBSS representative on planet. You've been making his job easy by handling some of the local issues and filtering out discourse and he seems to be expecting some kind of report on your progress.
Avatar
(did he know I was CBSS before I got there? I should maybe have mentioned, my plan was to pose as some big industry dude who wants to build a production line on the planet and wants to use cheap labor and materials for the buildings to get the mayor to sign off on it for a cut if he keeps quiet, then use that as evidence against him)
14:34
(couldn't think of any other approach to this for the life of me haha)
Avatar
(you came down in a mech and enough people who live here saw you in it. There's no one else in the region that could leverage that kind of technical expertise, and you already were interviewing people and looking for those with issues against the party)
15:38
(That happened when you first got here, which irl was a while ago, but in game days itys been just a few)
Avatar
(hrm, fair points)
17:34
(would there be any recording equipment non conspicuous enough that I could take it with me to the meeting with the mayor in the mech or could I otherwise procure it in town?)
Avatar
(The ship would have an argus web in its locker)
17:55
(which is hard to notice)
Avatar
(is that a SWN item or an Iron Stars one? I can't seem to find what it is)
Avatar
(It’s from 1E but there’s a write up for it in our iron stars rulebook I transferred over, since it was cut from revised edition )
Avatar
Argus Web- A set of almost invisible cameras and microphones worn by a subject. The web captures video and audio of the wearer’s surroundings for up to twenty-four hours before it must be downloaded onto a dataslab or wiped to make room for more. Noticing an argus web on a person requires a difficulty 12 Notice skill check or a very close physical search. The Argus Web costs 500 credits.
Avatar
(let's say that Kolbeckite went and fetched the Argus Web before going to see the mayor then)
07:42
"It's good to meet you Sir. I was hoping we could tour the place and see how you're doing here. The party wants me to find the best place for a new production line of military grade materials and I heard through the grapevine you've done well here."
Avatar
He seems flattered by the offer and introduction. “Hello there. I’d be happy to do it and give you a tour. How are things back on Pelasgon? It’s been over a year since I’ve been to the capital “
Avatar
"Fairly busy" says Kolbeckite as he awaits the mayor to start leading him out and through town, walking beside him and talking as they go "I presume you have heard the latest developments about the battle against the Claws. Suffice it to say many of us look forward to using the resulting pause the win has given us, and the space to expand, as soon as possible so we can all take a long holiday"
Avatar
"I heard we lost a couple ships too. I can see why the desire to get more resources into the mix is so important. Ships and the parts to make them do not come cheap. I believe Mehani might be an excellent destination for you to do this. I can ensure things go smoothy for you here"
Avatar
"I am hoping so, sir. I believe our interests align. You've done well for yourself here, I can tell as much from looking around your offices. It takes a certain kind of man to do that. There is no nobler goal for the individual than Legacy. I've been looking for someone that understands that, and the fact that sometimes in order to further that goal, we are called upon to make ugly choices, choices others, less fortunate, might deem selfish. But that is only because they are not in our position. I hope we understand each other"
Avatar
"Legacy. YOu speak the truth, and I've been doing my best to imprint mine all over this world. Together we could both be People's heroes to the CBSS. If we work together. Promise me I can trust you, and I'll show you everything"
Avatar
Kolbeckite chuckles "My friend, I aim to give more than enough proof during our continued co-operation, but for now indeed, my honest word will have to suffice, and you have that much for sure!" the Geon adopts a jovial attitude, fit for someone who has not had to suffer through life.
Avatar
(did you just want a tour of the town, and we can hope you pry something sensitive out of him at various stops ?I don't mind doing it that way)
Avatar
(yea, exactly)
Avatar
The first stop is the large pit outside town where refuse is thrown. “The geon hate this but I’ve been able to save so much money by having trash thrown here and not offering an actual public service to do it. This is our planet and they’re lucky we don’t burn the woods down just to spite them. I know you’re also a geon but from another world. Is your tribe so naturalist too? Or are these ones just odd?”
Avatar
"My old tribe is the same. There is a low understanding of technology, which my career has sadly suffered from, but I never fit in with them. I left early and decided to make something of myself. I have no feelings of empathy for them." Kolbeckite turns to look at the mayor "The slow progress down, you understand"
Avatar
"Indeed. I'm glad you get it. Declaring war on us might be the best thing they can do. We go in with the army, raze the settlement, and then we can industrialize the planet as much as we want. I'm working on something to that end, and I think it's going to go amazing"
Avatar
"Mh, yes. Good to hear there's a plan. A piece of advice if I may be so bold: Conquer them, don't destroy them, and let them have their gods and traditions. They'll be happier and less likely to revolt."
Avatar
“Gods? They have no place here. The party is the only god these savages need. They’ll live out the remainder of their days here in chains. The plan though. Yes. You seem to be someone I can trust. You’ve even given me some suggestions. I’m going to smuggle mining charges in with an order of comm servers and compads they are about to get from us. I’m going to hide them in the empty server towers and when the geon activate their pads it should bring the entire cave network down.
Avatar
Kolbeckite looks around as if to make sure no one is listening. "The less I know the better, my friend. That is a good plan though" (I think this would be enough evidence to present the records to the party)
Avatar
(Agreed)
Avatar
(Fast forward the tour?)
15:55
(I can post what he does right after it)
Avatar
(sure thing, we got what we needed)
Avatar
Kolbeckite leaves the mayor's office and takes his mech to a secluded spot and checks on the status of the Argus Web. Once he's satisfied with the footage, he attempts to contact the Chairman to give an update on the situation (let me know if it's better for Kolbeckite to see the Chairman in person again, but he's not yet done here for sure)
Avatar
(Its going to be just as fast traveling there as sending a message, it would be two days round trip)
Avatar
(I thought that'd be the case, we may as well do it in person then)
22:12
Kolbeckite boards the ship, asking the pilot to take him back to the Chairman
Avatar
(The age Of sail logistics is one of my favorite things about the setting )

(1 day of downtime back to Pelasgon)
Avatar
(Studying Heal again)
Avatar
Returning to Pelasgon your ship is welcomed into the dock and a small planet-runner brings you back to the planet's surface to the Chairman;s compound, where he is waiting to get your report.
Avatar
"Greetings Chairman. I return from Mehani in haste to report my findings. I have been looking into the situation there between the human settlement, the Geon and the Crimson Claws. The local populace is dissatisfied Sir, due to a lack of funds, lack of jobs, and poor living conditions including a lack of luxuries. Those issues have driven them to the open arms of the Claws. The local Geon population is up in arms about the treatment of the environment from the humans there, citing refuse and pollution that destroy the ecosystem. There is a common root to both these issues. And Sir....I think you better see this." Kolbeckite plays the recording back from the Argus Web to the Chairman, watching with him in silence until it ends, and waits for his reaction.
Avatar
the audio and video recorded by the Argus web are damning, and with other problems on the planet existing already, outright war with the Geon there would cause problems both in the council, and on planet. "We cannot let this plan get into motion." He sighs "We may be losing time as it is, but you did the right thing showing this to me personally. We do not know who might be in league, if anyone, in the party leadership. We need to get rid of those explosives before they're delivered, and we need to remove this man from power. Both objectives need to be hit at close to the same time. "
Avatar
"I will help in this effort as much as I can. I am afraid I am not trained in subterfuge or combat as much as I am with paperwork and business meetings. What are your orders Chairman?"
Avatar
"We cant have you in two places at once, yet' he winks. "Which of those two things do you think you'd be better suited to?"
Avatar
"Sir, I believe I will be better placed in the efforts to replace leadership in the Mehani settlement. But I must ask, how would you like to handle the matter? Will any CBSS security escort me? Am I to give him the news? Is there someone to replace him to ensure the people don't remain leaderless? Also, I had a humble request, if I may Sir. The time I have spent in Mehani and with the people there, both Geon and human, have made feel a certain responsibility to them. I'd like to oversee the development and modernisation of the planet if I can Sir, in an administrative role. I want to stand by the people there to make sure they get the jobs, tech and trade they need, and more besides. To smooth over relations with the local Geon, defuse the local Crimson Claw branch there and eventually leave Mehani a strong developing hub with robust economy and happy, working people. I realise its not a small task Sir. And that it takes years to achieve. But I want to help in any way I can and am prepared to take on responsibility for the work. If you'd allow, Sir. "
Avatar
(We haven’t layed the you the players having a discussion about individual control of worlds. I don’t want to assign governorship or something not having had that conversation but if you’re just saying you’re willing to do missions there for a while to continue improving things we can do that too)
Avatar
(yea the second, not interested in ruling the place since I want to travel)
Avatar
(New CBSS player is a pretty good thief, was going to send him after the explosives and com-servers to steal away the dangerous stuff, if thay works, since you were apprehending the old governor)
Avatar
(sounds great!)
Avatar
(okay, pitched it to him, standby)
Avatar
Another man, a recently released convict on Pelasgon named Eggix is also planning on taking part in the operation though you will likely not meet until after. He is charged with going after the explosive filled comm servers, while you and your bodyguard will work to apprehend the governor. Administration will follow on in a subsequent wave of transports once the governor is in custody and off world.
Avatar
(so just the two Geon? No security escort or something like that?)
Avatar
(If the Governor knows you’re coming, such as traveling with a big group, he will have time to rally loyalists and fight you. The crimson claws might also use that pitched battle in the settlement for their own advantage which are all things the chairman would hope to avoid. He also trusts you so i dont think his first reaction to your making a visit would be to pull a gun on you ) (edited)
Avatar
(how does the chairman respond to Kolbeckites request to oversee the development of mehani? In a non leadership capacity ofc)
Avatar
"If you want to spend some time ensuring the aftermath is smooth, I think that just saves me the trouble of ordering you to do it. We'll assign a party member more suited to the day to day admin to actually sit in the governor's seat"
Avatar
Kolbeckite returns to the planet runner, ready to fly back to Mehani with Pyro
Avatar
(1 day of downtime. Did we want the ship to enter openly, or hidden?)
Avatar
(hrm, I guess openly. Mayor doesn't know what I am about to do so I expect he won't put up defenses or something just by seeing the ship. Also I will study Heal for downtime)
Avatar
Your ship enters the Mehani system once again after a quick trip to the capital, and upon your return to the system it doesn't seem like there is any suspicion on the ground. A second shuttle is here as well, the other operative you were briefed upon. They must have entered the system quietly, choosing to communicate their position to you via tightbeam rather than through some kind of radio or space positioning comlink.
Avatar
Kolbeckite exits the shuttle and heads for the mayor's place, opting to avoid the other operative so as not to arouse suspicions by any possible onlookers
Avatar
(sneak/dex)
Avatar
The ship sets down in a quiet part of the large forest, north of the settlemnet and you're able to weave your way there, traveling through the woods and then keeping to shadows and alleys until you get to the Governor's simple estate here. Two guards remain by the front door, watching those who pass by.
Avatar
Kolbeckite presents himself and Pyro at the entrance and asks to see the mayor. He states his name hoping the mayor will remember him.
Avatar
The mayor had just spoken with you two days prior and seems to be unaware you left. His bodyguards let you inside and allow you to keep your weapons (though the mech suit would have been too big/noticable to bring)
Avatar
"Greetings again my friend! I am glad to say, I have set up a meeting with a friend of mine who can help us bring the progress of industry to this place. We can set out as soon as you're ready!"
23:16
(Kolbeckite's plan is to fly back to Pelasgon with the mayor under the guise of meeting with this friend, but then lead him to the closest police hq and hand him in. If he won't leave the planet, the plan is to lead him somewhere secluded where Pyro can detain him, then fly back)
Avatar
“Set out? What did you have in mind? Where’s the meeting ?”
Avatar
Kolbeckite smiles and takes a slow breath. "Right, I realise this is very sudden. I'm sorry about that, I didn't mean to unsettle you. My friend has been a long time associate of mine and has some very strong connections in the CBSS. We, meaning the two of us, my friend, and his connections, all are aligned in our aspirations. They are really excited to see this place grow economically, and we are the means to that end. But he is a very busy man, and if we do not meet him in Pelasgon soon, he will be called away for the forseeable future on business trips."
Avatar
(Talk /cha)
Avatar
“This is very sudden. I’m not sure I can leave things here on a whim like that. Whatever your partner is promising they can send me a message themselves and I would be happy to look over it”
14:27
“My grand plans have been set into motion today. Not a great time for me to leave “
Avatar
"Hrm, I can see your point. Very well, let's not stall then. I just hope it is all still on track without his help. Shall we meet for lunch? I'd like to discuss what I can do to help further our plans while I'm here!"
Avatar
(Did you mean the two of you meet? Even with the fastest ship the contact you made up wouldn’t be here for a couple days , when you said he would be gone already , so the Governor would know that wouldnt work
Avatar
(Oh yea Kolbeckite means just himself and the mayor, his plan is to lead him to Pyro and bag him into the ship and fly back)
Avatar
"Alright, lunch it is. Come back in a couple hours and we can walk over to my house. I'll let the family know to expect some company" he smiles. He seems like he is genuinely looking forward to a nice meal.
Avatar
"Perfect. See you then." Kolbeckite nods and takes his leave with a farewell. Him and Pyro will spend the next couple of hours in town, discussing strategies, and when the time has come, they will return to the house with Pyro out of sight, ready to ambush the mayor and Kolbeckite waiting for the mayor outside
Avatar
(any specifics you can give me about the plan wuld be very helpful so I make sure I am not misinterpreting anything)
Avatar
(so the idea is that Kolbeckite is going to meet him at his house as per usual and Pyro will be waiting somewhere outside but watching them, hidden. When they leave to go for lunch, Pyro will stalk them from a distance and when they are a safe distance away from the mayor's starting position, the house where Kolbeckite met him, Pyro will rush the mayor and pin him down, put cuffs on him and take him to the ship along with Kolbeckite. If anything goes wrong Kolbeckite will try to pretend he doesn't know Pyro and will try to get the mayor to safety, as he's discussed with Pyro before, to gain his trust even more and give himself and Pyro another shot at it, at a later date without becoming suspicious himself. If they decide to drive there, Kolbeckite has authorized Pyro to use his mech to keep up from a distance and with the camo on, so he can try to get to the mayor at his family's house)
Avatar
(Sounds goo,d its a small colony so we'll be walking, but lets get a sneak/dex for pyro shadowing you)
Avatar
(do I still roll sneak/dex with my stats even though it's Pyro doing it, or do I use the stats of the normal human hireling that he has to roll it?)
Avatar
(It would be 2d6+2 for him)
Avatar
Pyro is not seen as he creeps through the streets, shadowing you on your walk back to the governor's home. Close to his home at the edge of town there are fewer people around, and you approach an empty street aside from a few kids playing stickball on the corner
Avatar
Pyro quietly approaches and will detain the mayor. If successful, we will return to the ship with him and fly back to Pelasgon, straight to the police
11:18
(at least that's the plan)
Avatar
(going to be an opposed exert/str, with pyro getting a +3. The mayor is going to have enough time to try to struggle)
Avatar
(so I roll exert/str from my character sheet and roll separately for Pyro? What dice does he roll to add 3 to?)
Avatar
(Just a 2d6+5. 2 from pyro’s innate characteristics and 3 from the bonus you normally get when you’re the one trying to pin someone’s movement )
15:05
(Once we know the results the Governor will get to oppose but he probably won’t pass given the hefty bonus you get)
Avatar
(5 was my roll and 14 from Pyro)
Avatar
The Governor is about to say something when a sack is shoved over his head and upper body. A sharp blow by pyro knocks him out.
Avatar
"Good job my friend. Now back to the ship before anyone realises"
Avatar
This close to the ship, you're not observed as you grab the governor, throw him aboard, and he is restrained while the crew wastes no time getting you into space. (3xp, 5000 credits)
Avatar
We are headed for Pelasgon to give him up for processing, then I want to return to Mehani to let the Geon, settlers and Crimson Claw what happened and that things will be better. Actually, thinking about it, I should probably wait for a new leader to be placed before I do that, to make sure there's no chaos
Avatar
(this in character to Pyro, or out to me? )
Avatar
(sorry, to you)
Avatar
(What about appointing pyro as temporary leader? Most of your missions you've been handling great on your own, but if you'd rather not split up for now I get that too)
21:45
(I know we're discussing federalization in the galatea chat and among yourselves, if you were to be named governor here you could still travel and do other things, but we'd fix the local issues before you did. Eggix is still on planet helping the other half of the plan by taking out those explosives)
Avatar
(I've not really encountered danger so far, especially physical, and I think that's the only reason I've been doing ok without using Pyro. But when that happens, that's what he's there for. As for becoming governor, could I eventually hand that over to someone when I'm happy with where Mehani has gone in terms of development etc? Just so I am not tied down more than I need to. If I can do that though, I think Kolbeckite would accept that position)
Avatar
(Yeah we can for sure do thaT)
Avatar
(awesome)
Avatar
The governor is bundled aboard the ship, and is on his way back to Pelasgon for processing, questioning, and whatever the Party court decides their ultimate fate should be.
15:59
(does that mean you're staying behind to instill some order?)
Avatar
(I think so, I need to wrap up my current mission anyway and smooth things over with the Claw and Geon before I even get to developing the settlement/planet)
16:11
(out of interest, for long term plans like building improvements, doing research etc, do I just travel around doing other stuff while that is happening on Mehani and just come back to it when it is done or my attention is needed to make decisions, or do we do time jumps?)
16:12
(If I decide to build solar energy power plant for example, how do we handle that)
Avatar
(holdings arent really that granular , but ill work with you during exploration and stuff to set up things that are suppored in the rules. and yes you can travel around while projects are on going)
16:54
(we have the governor in custody, there's not mcuh else to do there aside from ensure stable leadership here as you rightly believe things will fall to chaos without)
Avatar
(Are we fast forwarding to the point where Kolbeckite is the governor, or doing it IC?)
15:47
(So I know where to pick up from)
Avatar
(I was going to ask you what you'd find more rewarding to do)
21:14
(we had to figure that other thing out firsT)
Avatar
(I am most interested in the practicals of talking to the Claw and Geon again, also the settlement. And getting busy with working with and for Mehani)
Avatar
THe ship heads into orbit as the Governor is in the custody of Party stormtroopers now. He will get his hearing and day in court on Pelasgon but there is nothing to say when he has been caught so red-handedly. Right now, as you return to the settlement it does not seem apparent that anyone knows he is gone- or at least he has not been missing long enough to worry anyone, but that is going to change fast, and you need to work quickly to ensure chaos does not break out. Pyro is able to get the comm channel for the local military commanders here, and begins routing them all to your compad so the security situation here can be dealt with before it deteriorates.
Avatar
Kolbeckite gets in touch with the militiary commanders first. "All commanders on this net, be advised. This is Kolbeckite, the new governor. The governor that was here before was found guilty of a number of crimes against the people of the CBSS and has been taken to Pelasgon to be dealt with. In his stead, I aim to serve the people in every way he did not during my station here, and to see Mehani flourish and bloom. Now however, I require your services to ensure the smooth transition of leadership, as I plan to make an announcement not too far into the future to let the people know of the change"
Avatar
The commanders are all on board with the plan and understand there were some issues with the former government. Theyre worried about crimson claws opportunists and general unrest in the colony specially among the most senior public officials
Avatar
"I understand your concerns friends. My first priority is making contact with Crimson Claw and negotiating with them. If we reach an accord they have no reason to exist and will disband. I don't need an armed escort, but be advised that is what I will do, in case I go radio silent." Kolbeckite then puts the word out that he wants to talk to the Claw again, and sets up a meet somewhere in town.
Avatar
An anonymous message is sent to you after you spread the word. The same alley as a few days ago. Tonight. Come alone. You may bring a sidearm if you feel comfortable that way.
Avatar
Kolbeckite shows up at the agreed spot, having told the commanders where it will be but also told them not to send anyone unless he goes radio silent. He carries no firearms.
16:18
Pyro is not too far, but in the area, out of sight and earshot
Avatar
The woman you met a few days earlier is in the alley. She is hooded and wearing a mask in the shape of a Fox though the material is black and dark gray rather than red and Orange She is looking patient and calm , minding her business as you approach.
Avatar
"Greetings again. I have news I hope you'll like. The governor you knew was found guilty of corruption and misappropriation of state funds among other things. The people will have a new governor now."
Avatar
"The new governor? What is your plan for this world as new governor?"
Avatar
"I have my work cut out for me. Not only do I need to plan and successfully implement growth and development and social care for the colony but I need to undo my predecessor's years of exploitation and corruption. As for what is relevant to this meeting, I wanted you to know of the change, and that my focus will be the people. So I would like for you to share this with your friends: My first mission is ensuring stability and good relations among the people here. My predecessor's corruption has driven a wedge between the colony, the Geon and the people inside them. Unity is what the CBSS stands for and he failed to represent that. Step 2 is jobs. I want to hunt down the unemployment index and ensure that everyone can pursue a career, trade or vocation under the CBSS, in workplaces built and organised with respect to the planet and the people in it. Step 3 is social care. Healthcare, financial support, accessibility solutions, everything needed to make sure no one feels alone, because they are not alone. There's much more I need to do. But those are my immediate priorities"
Avatar
"We will be watching. You seem to have a plan. Follow it, put your actions behind your words, and you will have no problem from the Crimson Claws on this world. If we do not see change soon you will have all you can do to keep your office, there are more of us on this planet than you think"
Avatar
"That is fair. I have a request however. I want a comms channel I can talk to you on. No one else, no surveilance, just a direct line from me to you."
Avatar
"I will give you a compad. It will give you a way to reach us. Do not try to trace the number on it, we've taken precautions. Let's base this exchange on trust"
Avatar
"I appreciate the leap of faith, and recognise you don't do it as a habit. I won't keep you longer." Unless the woman has more to say, Kolbeckite will leave. (Is there a place Kolbeckite is given to live in, as the governor, or does he have to rent/buy property? Also it would be good to know the name of the colony since I will be staying for a while haha)
Avatar
(The colony doesn't have its own name, its the only CBSS settlement on the planet and nobody has given this much care to it before now)
18:52
(The governor's home is open now)
Avatar
Kolbeckite will head to the ex governors home. (is it empty or is his family there?)
Avatar
(the family would have been relocated)
14:11
The home is empty and has recently been cleaned. The belongings of the previous governor's family have been removed from the home and some simple furniture from local stocks have been brought in for you to use until you decorate to your own style and preference. There is more than enough space for you and Pyro here.
Avatar
Kolbeckite and Pyro will settle in for the night and in the morning go to the forest in search of the Geon settlement
Avatar
(Eggix is almost done with his mission there, we're either going to have a bomb crater, or a grateful group of geon so once we know how that's going, we can move this forward)
Avatar
(he's trying to stop the bombs going off, right?)
14:50
(so in the game world, governing would be a lot of work, passing legislations, making deals, planning projects etc. How will it work for me as a player? Are there mechanics involved?)
14:51
(or is it more a case of I go around doing missions and once in a while I check in to make a narrative decision or two)
Avatar
(He is trying to stop those bombs going off yes. He has 2/3 of them handled, but they know something is wrong now so we'lre waiting to see how this situation concludes. He's opposite me in time zone so im expecting by tonight we should know what's happening there. It's more a case of you going around doing missions and there will occasionally be decisions to be made here. On Mehani , I will be updating the map, but we have no idea what is on the western or southern continent at all, and mehani has a ton of people not doing anything so we can do some narrative stuff to establish holdings here too)
15:31
15:32
(the ship service depot is in space so it can service cruiser and larger ships, but everything else is on the ground and we have tons of room for more )
Avatar
(Oh awesome. And is deciding what else is built something that I do, or does it go to a vote in the polity channel etc?)
Avatar
(Normally, parsnips would use the build asset action to build holdings across the CBSS over the month, especially on planets where no player is giving them attention, but if you are taking on the responsibility of governor and you tell me what you're interested in doing, if we're going to put in mission work we can build things as well) (edited)
15:35
(basically a special thing outside the rules, since we're doing a mission)
Avatar
(awesome, so in the game world, Kolbe would be building stuff to help the mehani colony for things they need. Is that something we want to explore or is it more a case of we build whatever the polity needs? And is there a list of projects I can look at to decide what to build?)
Avatar
(Updated map, i am replacing this on the world anvil now)
15:41
(building what the colony needs is more or less also building what the CBSS needs, they're one in the same. I will link you the holdings sheet)
15:41
Expeditions Expedition Type,Cost in Credits,Time To Complete,Cost in Primary Material,Cost in Secondary Material,Cost in Tertiary Material,Reward,Salvage Operation,Requirements and Rewards Short Prospecting Expedition,50 Million,1 Month,500 Tons Acricultural Supplies,2000 Tons Colonial Material...
Avatar
(amazing, thanks)
Avatar
(holdings are on the second tab)
Avatar
(in which case, I could maybe do some more travelling around and check in with the Geon if they're there after I come back, or we can also say we time bubble for that particular scene if we want)
Avatar
(We can explore for now, i dont want to pressure eggix to finish things fast)
Avatar
(yea exactly. Would I pick up a new mission from the chairman npc, or is it an option to ask in the polity channel if we need any diplomacy /negotiation work to take place anywhere?)
15:51
(I don't mind just exploring mehani also, just wondering what my options are. Or maybe I can get in touch with Lyuba and ask if he wants to explore it and report back given he's a scout)
15:52
(I think it would be fun to talk to the polity members about missions like that and end up doing missions for each other, but I don't know if the polity channel is fitting for that or if that is how you want to do things at all)
Avatar
(if you want to ask around in the #cbss-chairmans-council we can see who is doing what or what might need some attention)
Avatar
(Where are the Noctua refugees living on Mehani? Are they integrated within the colony or have their place elsewhere?)
Avatar
(integrating with the colony)
Avatar
Kolbeckite will set off in the morning to visit the Noctua in town and talk to them
Avatar
The Noctua have been trickling in from their colony ships in orbit, which will eventually be brought down to the surface and disassembled to make suitable housing for them. Many saw firsthand the horrors of the Ascendency and are happy to be on the other side of the galaxy and behind several battle fleets worth of protection now. They haven't been here long enough to really understand the politics and intricacies of life on this world but are willing to pledge whatever loyalty the CBSS needs in exchange for giving them their safety. The same sentiments are given over and over when asked.
Avatar
"I read about your people, my friends, and about your nocturnal lifestyle. I want you to feel at home within the CBSS and Mehani and to have a healthy, co-operative relationship with the rest of the multicultural society we are so proud of. To that end you can perhaps help me in my dilemma: I could not decide whether it'd be best for you to live in the same colony as everyone else which would help expediate you feeling like part of our community, as we would like you to be, especially given the horrors you've just had to escape, but might end up being problematic due to the clashing schedules the different lifestyles have. We wouldn't want relations to become tense because you can't sleep during the day due to the rest of the colony being awake and busy, and vice versa. Conversely, we could put you up in your own district where you wouldn't feel pressured to adapt to a different lifestyle, and wouldn't be bothered during the day by noise, but that might make it easier to be xenophobic towards you for the people that need to have face to face interactions with you more than others before they realise you're not a threat. Ultimately the decision is mine, but I wanted to talk to you about it and ask if you have a preference"
Avatar
The Noctua here are perfectly capable of working during the day if needed, and would prefer to be part of a community as that is how their society is based. So far the human settlers here have been kind enough to them, many having escaped bad circumstances on other worlds for shelter here themselves. Their past trauma has formed a current bond, and there have not been any reported clashes between the two major demographics here in town.
Avatar
"Perfect, I will take steps to action that. In the meantime, is there anything I can help with as governor? Any problems or questions you might have?"
Avatar
They haven't been here long enough to have many concerns but places to work were in short supply already, their coming here is going to make the problem far worse.
Avatar
"I have a plan that will focus on jobs as a priority, so I can tell you now that is a cause already in my sights that I am committed to. Apart from that, my door is always open to you for anything you might need, that is the only way for me to help you."
Avatar
“Your attention is encouragement enough Governor. Thank you for everything l
Avatar
(so since we're standby on eggix's mission, and the CBSS assault, I though Kolbeckite might go back home as per his personal goal and make sure things are OK)
Avatar
(I'm getting the assault together now)
Avatar
(awesome)
Avatar
(Eggix is still about to save those geon but is on the very last thing )

(cool, thanks!)

(He hasn’t responded in a few days, and you’re here where he is not )
00:56
(So we can go there )
Avatar
(alright)
12:27
Kolbeckite sets off for the Geon settlement in his mech, at speed, hoping to get there before the worst happens
Avatar
You can see authorities and a Cbss bomb removal team are on scene wrapping up the cleanup from this crisis. Eggix is speaking with his former jail handlers , being given the terms for his release and isn’t able to be spoken with right now. Most of the tribe has come out, pelting the drivers and guards who carried this out with small stones , enraged that they were almost killed in an effort for something as resource production
Avatar
Kolbeckite approaches the CBSS teams and introduces himself before asking what happened
Avatar
The team has been sent here to take the conspirators into custody. You had known about the governors plan to destroy this cavern and the geon tribe here and have arrested the governor already. Agent Eggix was responsible for shadowing the convoy and disarming the explosives here before they could go off, taking on extreme personal danger to do so
Avatar
(Are we saying Eggix suceeded and I am here to calm down the Geons? or?)
Avatar
(You said you wanted to meet them and talk to them. Eggix succeeded but we weren’t sure if he would when you first mentioned wanting to come here last time we talked about it
Avatar
(Ah ok, I remember now)
12:07
Kolbeckite thanks the CBSS teams and approaches the Geons, raising his hulking hands in the air and pleads "Friends, please. There is no need for this. Let us talk." He then listens for any grievances the Geon have
cbssemoji 1
Avatar
They're obviously unhappy the CBSS decided to try to blow them up instead of trying to make some kind of resource collection treaty. They're also not planning on leaving their tribal lands anytime soon and promise they will use whatever force they can muster if a relocation attempt is made. They're very on edge here, understandably so. They're willing to embrace the party and the progress it brings, but only if their culture is respected, as is the planet they now share with you.
Avatar
"My friends, I apologise for what happened here. I had no time until now to come and talk to you about recent developments, but let me tell you now, this act of terrorism was put into motion by the corrupt and self absorbed ex mayor of the colony. I have personally delivered him to the authorities along with proof of his guilt and have been enstated the governor of this planet. As such, I will do everything in my power to ensure you are happy here and reserve every right to stay, but I can assure you now, no one will challenge your right to be here, and if they do they will have me to answer to. Please tell me if there is anything I can do for you, about anything. I have already set in motion plans to green-ify the industry here to ensure our shared home is not harmed."
Avatar
This seems to be enough to relax their immediate concerns, but they'd need to see what happens or how you intend to fulfill those promises. They were also promised uplift and more modern technology, and the current "solution" to that problem was a trojan horse meant to destroy their settlement.
Avatar
"I will get in touch with the CBSS and see where we are with the tech, immediately." If there is nothing else, Kolbeckite will go to Pelasgon and talk with whoever is appropriate about how close we are to supplying the Geon with the equipment they requested.
Avatar
(Lubya managed to finish this investigation, so the mining equipment is on the way, as is some other uplift goods, but they're going to be nervous for a while seeing as how things here got pretty bad)
Avatar
(Does Kolbeckite know that without travelling to Pelasgon or does he have to go to find out?)
Avatar
(we know that without traveling there)
Avatar
(In which case Kolbeckite will instead see if there are any pressing matters here on Mehani for him to handle as governor and if not he will travel back home to Sanjaru to see his village as per his personal goal and make sure everything is alright there) (edited)
Avatar
(I think other than some scouting, for the moment we're okay)
Avatar
(ok, to Sanjani then!)
11:01
Kolbeckite asks for a ship to be prepped and when it's ready, he enters it, straps in and asks the pilot to take him to Sanjaru, telling him he will give him directions when they're closer so they land close to Fenced-by-Hills (edited)
Avatar
(Should be five days of downtime on the way)
Avatar
(ok, will study Heal for all of those)
Avatar
Arriving at Sanjaru you see many other ships in the system. Mobius and Karros are here , involved in other projects right now
Avatar
If they are not occupied, Kolbeckite will greet them briefly and afterwards will seek out a smaller shuttle to take him to Fenced-by-Hills
Avatar
(They’re in the middle of their missions , unless you intend to lend a hand to one or both , we can just push onto your mission)
Avatar
(No its ok, was just a causal wave, let's carry on)
14:39
(Maybe I can help after I check up on Fenced-by-Hills)
14:40
(If they need my help that is)
Avatar
The pilot enters the atmosphere and upon remembering your earlier instructions, waits to be told where to set down so Fenced-by-Hills can be approached safely, without panicking anyone on the ground.
Avatar
Kolbeckite gives the pilot some instructions on the approach, then when they are close enough, points out a clearing with relatively level terrain for the shuttle to land on
Avatar
This close seems like it is good enough, and the pilot sets down, lowering the ramp for you to get out while the shuttle engines cool. He will handle post flight checks and prep the shuttle for launch again by the time you're done with your business here.
Avatar
Kolbeckite and Pyrophanite trek the distance to Fenced-by-Hills and walk into the village, looking for familiar faces
Avatar
(This was kinda your vision here, so I'm happy to take a co-driver seat if you want to walk me through the settlement and who would be around from your previous time here/ as well as how they react to your return)
Avatar
(ok! I didn't really have a set idea for how things were going to be here but I can riff)
11:24
Initially, there is no reaction to the two Geon walking into the village. They don't seem to be noticed. Then when someone takes a good look at them and the two wave, the Geon erupts in surprise "Kolbeckite! Pyrophanite! You're back!" The people around that hadn't noticed them, all turn to face them now and a murmur slowly rises to a din of joyful questions and exclamations as they flock around the two. The returned Geon greet everyone and talk to the villagers for a while before slowly breaking off to go meet the elders. (Unless you wanted to create a problem for the village that Kolbeckite can solve, I can narrate everything being ok, and eventually leaving the village)
Avatar
(actually, I think if they wanted to sort of continue to advance and be a bigger part of the CBSS that's a good thing to use this time to discuss. The humans had also been fighting on the central continent and that would have probably caused some concern)
Avatar
(We can do that. Would you like to control the elders and I can talk to them with Kolbeckite?)
Avatar
(sure, I think that's probablt the best way to do it)
Avatar
Kolbeckite approaches the elder's moot hall, a bigger, elongated structure that stands out from the huts and houses of the village. He finds the elders outside, mid-conversation, and once they recognise him and Pyrophanite, the customary greetings take place and a short retelling from Kolbeckite of what they've been up to. Kolbeckite's smile fades a little as he goes on "I am sorry for the manner in which I left. I know it was sudden, and I left a lot of things undone, up in the air. But I saw no other way to avoid conflict. Tell me, how are things with the CBSS now? Did you manage a smooth relationship with the communist foreman?"
Avatar
"Things have been a bit smoother. Our discussion did not last long, the human settlements on the mainland got into some sort of feud with one another, and the fighting continued for some time before more off-world support came to end it. We have not had contact with anyone since then- but we are not easy to get to, either. "
Avatar
"Feud? Is everyone here safe? Something I can do about it?"
Avatar
"Everyone here is safe and the war is over now thanks to the CBSS, but we haven't been across the sea to where the invaders came from. They might come back in a season or two if no one goes over there"
Avatar
"I will check in with them while I have time away from Mehani." Kolbeckite, if allowed, would spend the night here, catching up with old friends and family before setting off for the human settlements in the morning to see what the trouble is.
Avatar
(im not sure if you were directly involved in this , if you weren’t here yet it would have been shortly before you started playing - but warbands from across the sea landed here and all the central settlements had to band together to fight them off. The invading army was routed, but no one went across the water to find out why, or to see if this is going to happen again/how to get it to stop) (edited)
Avatar
(Oh yea I was not involved in that)
Avatar
(Okay. So that being the case , going across the sea to get a bead on if more fighting is imminent would help with the mood at fenced by hills)
Avatar
Kolbeckite, Pyrophanite and the pilot return to the shuttle in the morning to fly across the water
Avatar
Arriving over the water to the western landmass you can see many columns of smoke rising skyward. There are many people living here in different communities, some at war, others at peace and trying to rebuild- but word of the CBSS has not reached these people yet, and all they know is the savagery of tribal conflict on a world that fell from comfortable living. One such farming community is below you tilling the land with the help of some domesticated dinos, and from the air you can see something they do not, a raiding party with their own mounts, creeping through the forest toward the small village, about 3km away.
Avatar
Pyrophanite taps Kolbeckite on the shoulder and points at the raiders below. "Look!" Kolbeckite tells the pilot to set the shuttle down between the raiders and the village, hoping to scare the raiders off before negotiating with the villagers
Avatar
The pilot sets the ship down and amid the trees, rather than above them, you're not sure if the raiders have been run off.
Avatar
Kolbeckite and Pyrophanite disembark. Pyro goes on a short patrol a few feet around the shuttle and Kolbeckite approaches the villagers. "Greetings friends. Be not afraid. I am Kolbeckite from beyond the sea and when I heard of the strife you suffer, I came to help." That is his short greeting, before he gauges the people's reaction
Avatar
They’re surprised someone has landed here but don’t react with hostility. They have living memory of pre scream life and travel , and although conditions here are primal their minds are not
Avatar
"My friends, I am an emmissary of the CBSS, a big collection of people working together towards progress with brotherhood and sisterhood at the forefront, through unity and hard work. My birth home is just across the sea. I want to help you, if you should choose to trust me. Tell me, how can I help ensure peace in your homes?"
Avatar
The locals are beginning to gather, when Pyro reports back on his short patrol that a knot of raiders- perhaps the most hardcore of the ground- are continuing to advance on the town. There are seven of them, and they'll be there in about fifteen minutes.
Avatar
(Can we say Kolbeckite brought the mech, or should I have specified that before?)
Avatar
(The ship has enough spare tonnage to carry it so it travels with you even if you’re not inside it)
Avatar
Kolbeckite warns the villagers of the incoming raiders but tells them not to worry and that he will drive them off, and asks them not to endanger themselves. He then returns to the shuttle to get in his mech and powers it on, leading it out the shuttle and towards the direction the raiders come from, aiming to find them and parley with them safely
Avatar
(survive/wis, at a +2 since you've got the terrain scanner)
Avatar
(10)
Avatar
You're able to find some anomalies in the terrain, showing you the location of crouching raiders and their hiding raptor mounts. They seem to be trying to avoid the stomping mech, unsure of what might be coming for them, other than it is very big
Avatar
Kolbeckite turns the external speaker on "The time of neighbouring hostilities is over! Go to your homes! I will soon visit you there, and if you remain peaceful, I will help you resolve your problems and needs!"
Avatar
The ground scanners show a bit of movement. They're retreating, very slowly as to not give away their positions and provoke an attack- unaware your ground scanners can see them and you possess the technology to do so
Avatar
The Geon returns to the village and exits the mech, before addressing the villagers. "I see I came just in time to avert a raid. How long have you been having these attacks?"
Avatar
The locals have not been attacked in a long time. This would have taken them entirely by surprise, but they knew an army was defeated on the mainland, and some of the other local tribal leaders are beginning to grow restless amongst themselves as coffers and supplies get low.
Avatar
(how much freedom does Kolbeckite have in terms of offering them help? Can he promise them CBSS supplies? Or even offer them a place in the polity?)
Avatar
(this is already a CBSS planet, so them joining is something we should strive for)
Avatar
"There is no need for you to struggle for necessities anymore. I am part of a wider group of likeminded individuals that spans planets. We have fellowship and union in our hearts and strive to elevate each other to excellence. I would like to invite you all to join us!"
Avatar
"Does fellowship and union stop the raids? or fill barns with hay for our animals or our bread? " One asks, the village lawmaker seems to have several people agreeing with him so far- that this sounds nice, but might not be practical to them.
Avatar
"Everyone belonging to the CBSS will be cared for and supplied to fill their needs. Steps will be taken to provide you with food, clothing, medicine and amenities, and as for the raids, you won't have to worry about them anymore. We will make sure."
Avatar
"and you no doubt want something in return. What would that be?" The tone is softening, there are fewer adamant hearts by the man's side now rejecting the idea just because.
Avatar
"You can keep living your lives in peace, while we go through the transitionary period of getting you everything you need, establishing connections and the like. Eventually, if and when we need your labour, or resources of your land, we will negotiate that when the time comes. Everyone in the CBSS contributes to the wellbeing and progress of every other member; as you understand, we wouldn't be able to support new communities joining, potentially like you, if we didn't all pull our weight to contribute. Now I know what you're thinking: You don't want to be introduced into a hierarchy where you sit at the bottom labouring for the older members while they sit pretty on their tech and funds. What I can offer you is flexibility in joining. If there is anything the CBSS can do to make you feel more comfortable joining, I am here to talk about it"
Avatar
"The raiders, if you could handle them or get them to stop raiding us, we'd be able to actually contribute. "
Avatar
As the group is thinking things over more . @Mobius and his small shuttle arrive, landing nearby. There might be more his communications program can offer them now that there is a listening post across the sea.
Avatar
As the shuttles doors open thick smoke comes out, and soon after a mosk smoking 5 cigarettes at the same time. "Err alien jet lag." He says, stashing his commpad and shrugging off the mind fog He looks around, checks his notes and scanner and sighs. Then looks around again and stretches himself for a while, his mosk exoskeleton cracking as he does so. "Let's do this!" he finally tells himself.
Avatar
Kolbeckite slowly turns to watch the shuttle land, then walks over to Mobius as he emerges from the shuttle. "Well met, friend. Take time to recover from the flight. I am offering to have these people join the CBSS, and they are primarily interested in their neighbours not raiding them anymore. My thinking is we ask both of them to join, separately, and once we provide them with the essentials there will be no need for raiding "
Avatar
Mobius listens closely, grumpy with his jet lag, he resists the urge to suggest a show of force against the raiders before inviting them over "Thanks for having me, good to meet you in person. Please tell me more about these raids, how violent have they being, any deaths?" (edited)
Avatar
"I am not sure myself, I only just got here, but they are nothing new it seems" (edited)
Avatar
"ok, then I think we should learn more about them before any invitations." "I for one am an adept of 'educate the ignorant and destroy the cruel'" he adds, trivially (edited)
Avatar
The locals continue talking. They have not been raided before, but raids to claim some lives. Killing large numbers of people means the community will not recover or generate future wealth to raid, so though destructive, the raids tend to spare as much of the populace as possible, aside from some unfortunates trapped inside burning buildings, or killed in the act of defending their holdings.
Avatar
"in my experience, what the people say makes sense. Raids happen for lack of resources, there's no real animosity here, or we'd be looking at a massacre right now. I take your words as caution though, and there's wisdom in that. Should we go look for the raiders' settlement? "
Avatar
"If that's ok I'd like to take a look at the cooperative locals village 1st, then the raiders." "are you armed?" (edited)
Avatar
Kolbeckite thumbs at the mech suit some way behind them. "It's not primarily for combat, but I have a rifle I can use outside of it, and I have Pyrophanite with me, who is more than enough" The Geon in question waves at them from his patrol route
Avatar
"oh, wow" he is sincerely surprise "Hi Pyro!" "I uh, have a shotgun." he adds (edited)
Avatar
(lets go to the friendly village then)
Avatar
(You’re at it)
Avatar
(ok) Mobius would look around and search for signs of attacks. he then would try talking with local in search for testimonies. He is interested in learning how barbaric these raiders are. After that, he would like to ask Kolbeckite for his input on nexts steps. Should they both team up or split up, should they attack or contact the raiders camp after scouting it? (edited)
Avatar
"I believe it is best we start off on our best foot and talk to them. If they agree to join us we can provide them with what's necessary, and they won't need to raid anymore. We can also police the area if both tribes fly the CBSS banner so to speak, and we can enforce peace. And sticking together might help, unless you wanted to prioritise something else."
Avatar
"OK! We go talk to them. But don't invite them to join us until we assess their culture. We can't risk poisoning our fraternity from within." (edited)

Your shuttle has been able to track the raiders leaving the area to a small settlement 20km north of here, The raptors will not arrive for a few hours, bringing news of the encounter with you. The shuttle can get you there ahead of them, if you wish.
Avatar
"what if we take the shuttle and use it as a display of our tech superiority? it might help discourage and violence against us, maybe even make them more amendable."
Avatar
"I think that is a great idea"
Avatar
The shuttle manages to pick you up at the edge of this friendly village for a rapid re-deployment north. The crew feels comfortable bringing you in 1 kilometer out from this raiding clan, on the north side so you will not have returning potentially hostile scouts at your back. Your flyover is surely noticed on the ground and you expect you'll be met in the woods by someone, but they have not yet materialized as the flight crew sets you down to land once again.
Avatar
Kolbeckite exits the shuttle in his mech and scans the area
Avatar
Mobius, in his battle dress, leaves his shotgun behind his back with a sling. He waits for the big mech to do its thing, while also reflecting about buying a mech himself
Avatar
The terrain scanner shows the rough outline of the jungle ahead. You're here well before the raiders are set to return, and the locals are devoid of most of the people who could actually do you harm. It looks like a few hundred people live here in this farming community, but the land looks poorer, rockier, and dryer than that of their more southerly neighbors.
Avatar
Mobius would take point, slowly walking towards them looking for someone to start talking. he lights a cigarette and then keeps his hands visible
Avatar
After ten minutes of walking, the terrain scanner on the mech picks up three roughly humanoid shapes. They are not adults, and are trying to creep close to you, concealed in the foliage of the forest.
Avatar
(I'd ignore them and keep going. But I'll wait for kolb)
Avatar
Kolbeckite lets Mobius know of the humanoid pings on the scans but says they are most likely children.
Avatar
(We're electing to not speak with them and move on then? )
13:29
(I understood mobius wants to keep moving but I wasn't sure what to do with that last statement)
Avatar
(yea, if those humanoid shapes are not adults, we're gonna carry on into the village and look for adults to talk to)
Avatar
The children are left in awe as the mech suit stomps past with Mobius walking just near it. They have never seen either before and after another few moments of walking you arrive on the north end of the village where several farmers are setting down their tools in astonishment.
Avatar
Kolbeckite lets Mobius take the lead
Avatar
Mobius puts out his cig and sighs, he pats the mech as if the metal was alive, as if he was patting Kolbeckite before showtime. "Good day! Good day, people. We come in peace, don't be afraid. My friend here just have large bones, thats all."
15:15
He keeps walking with open hands "all we want is a good chat, you know, about the weather, planetary politics, life changing decisions... small talk really"
Avatar
Two strangers have come into their village, their warriors are not here, and they're spouting nonsense. Several of them take a few steps back, unsure of where the conversation is heading.
Avatar
Mobius scratches his mosk head and sighs heavily. It seems his disgust with raiding is hindering his diplomatic skills. It surely has nothing to do with all the drugs he took to hold off his jet leg. "Ok Kolb, your turn" (edited)
Avatar
(does the mech have a universal translator?)
15:40
(or do I understand the language, but its nonsense in context?)
Avatar
(They speak mandate so there’s no language barrier here )
Avatar
"we're interested in the possibility of cooperation, but we wanted to observe and talk about your customs and culture first" Kolbeckite attempts through his mech's speaker
Avatar
One of the women steps forward and places her scythe on the ground “Cooperation? Well you’ve got questions. Ask them. We aren’t going anywhere “
Avatar
Mobius uses him commpad to communicate with Kolb privately for a moment "NGL, I'm stingy about this whole raider village. might be better for all of us if you take point in this first few steps of diplomacy with them." He then crosses his arms and stare at them villagers (edited)
Avatar
"We would like to know: how are you finding life here? Is there anything you need?"
Avatar
“Life is hard here. The ground doesn’t give us much to make food with. Animals can’t find enough to graze on. Working with the tools we have is better than your hands but not much “
14:29
You can see the community around you is very poor indeed. Almost everyone looks malnourished in some way or another
Avatar
"are there any communities around here that ever offered to help or trade?"
Avatar
“It’s difficult to travel with all the hostile wildlife around. The Dino’s don’t allow east travel “
Avatar
"So the routes are difficult for trading but not for raiding?"
Avatar
Kolbeckite intervenes "We may be able to help you with building fortifications. Possibly also supplying food. In return, we'd like to encourage peaceful relations with your neighbours, and would ask for your fair and honest labour towards the advancement of our cooperation"
Avatar
(I hope this IC resistance is ok for you, let me know if it becomes too much)
23:32
Mobius frowns but doesn't interrupt his comrade, deep down glad one of them is being responsible with negotiations
Avatar
“Sending strong warriors to s destination or a group of fat merchants and wagons through the forest. Who do you think gets to the other sid e?”
Avatar
"I don't see your point..."
10:46
(no worries Mobius, I like staying true to the characters!)

"Right. Well. Times change, nature changes, this world is changing. A great faction, a kinhood of many planets, just arrived here. And from now on raiders are going to start not making it. But trading convoys will. Including those with the relief supplies we've been sending around. We came to this planet in search of those who value cooperation and equality. With the offer to help make avoidable suffering stop, in exchange for keeping those values true and eventual trading partnerships. Personally I'm also interested in cutting short any cruelty, exploitation or domination of sentient beings, by any means necessary." (edited)
Avatar
(He was answering mobius , as far as his challenge that them sending warriors out isn’t necessary )
15:10
(Trading is a lot more challenging for them than taking what they need from elsewhere by force )

"When those times come we won't have the need to do it anymore like you say, but those days aren't here, our children are hungry now. The land and the ground doesn't give us the food we need now, the water makes us sick, now. We can't afford to wait. If someone else has to die or go without so that we will live and survive, that is just the way of the world"
Avatar
(do the Geon consume the same food? Could I perhaps go back to Fenced by Hills, get some emergency food for them if they agree to be peaceful?)
21:32
(until we set things up anyway)
Avatar
(how big is this place, dozens, hundreds of ppl? mobius did bring some supplies anyway)
Avatar
(A few hundred. Leaving and coming back would be about as long as organizing a shipment from the capital. We do have a ship service depot in the system that would have supplies on hand for replenishing ship stores that we could use

"I can offer my personal supplies to help the most malnourished, then we'll get a few batches of relief supplies asap. In exchange, if your warriors ever go out raiding again... well you'll end up with less mouths to feed." "we can continue debating further agreements after that"
Avatar
(No need to use the reply feature if you can avoid it)
Avatar
(ok!)
Avatar
It seems to be that if a relief shipment comes in they’ll be willing to entertain more negotiations. Right now words do not do much h for them
Avatar
Mobius, is tempted to further pressure them, but decides to trust his comrade's judgement. He turns around and leaves the village without a word. He's also thinking about the logistical steps to fully feed that village, but his hard ass image is also important (edited)
Avatar
Kolbeckite seems pleased enough with arranging a shipment and makes the necessary calls to do that.
09:26
(sidenote, I am back home with family for the holidays so my availability is bound to be unpredictable until the new year)
Avatar
(Its been slow for a lot of us around here for the same reasons, so no worries. We have two choices here, we can do some other things as a game week passes and a relief ship comes from the capital, or we can empty out the ship service depot's stores here for emergency use to get these people aid now)
Avatar
(Mobius would go for helping now as that could stop raiding now)
Avatar
(I am happy to go do other things!)
Avatar
(Got a split decision here. I’ll flip a coin 😂)
Avatar
(I mean, we could split back to our channels too maybe. but if you wanna stick together mobius could be satisfied by threatening them and then leaving) (edited)
Avatar
(If you threaten them theyre probably just going to kill you)
22:31
(It’s been a tense conversation already and they’ve already agreed to as much as they’re willing , that would be kind of gratuitous
Avatar
(As in dont raid until we come back in a couple days or we wont help u. Not a violent threat)
Avatar
(Whatever you’re going to say go ahead and say and then we can split up then)
Avatar
(if we're splitting up then Mobius is helping them right now. if so:) Mobius decides that helping them with whatever resources they got at hand is the best course of action. Helps hungry children, stops further raids. And thats what he goes for. "alright hear me out. I'm going to share some emergency supplies with you right now. Can I count on you upholding your side of our agreement, no more raids?
Avatar
If the supplies come they won’t have a reason to raid. If they don’t, they’re going to prioritize their own survival. The people are becoming a bit restless at the conversation continuing to revolve around this same concept
Avatar
Mobius moves back towards the shuttle to unload whatever they have w them
Avatar
THe contents of the local ship service depot are ferried down, and for now, you've avoided some bloodshed in the region. (3xp, 5000 credits both of you, and we can split up from here)

(I've had a think and I decided to leave Iron Stars. I'm not terribly happy with the character and the format doesn't work as well as I thought for me. Thank you for running it though and putting the crazy work you do into it, it's a nice community 🙂 )
